How Early Intervention Helps Children Succeed
Some children leap into new experiences with ease. Others hesitate. Some find their words early, while others communicate with gestures, expressions, or big feelings that don’t always make sense yet.
While we like to say every child moves at their own pace, sometimes subtle signs—like a tough transition or a classroom meltdown—can be a child’s way of showing they need a bit more support to feel safe and successful in their day.
That’s where early intervention comes in. Not as a reaction to what’s “wrong,” but as a caring, thoughtful response to what a child might be telling us before they can even say it out loud.
What early intervention really means
Special rights, not special needs
At Piccoli, early intervention is about giving children the support they need to feel confident and capable in their own time and way. Rather than focusing on a diagnosis, we honour what the Reggio Emilia Approach® calls special rights—the belief that every child is capable and deserving of the right support, time, and environment to grow and thrive.
Personalized support
When a child struggles with speech, regulation, or social interactions, our team begins with careful observation. We notice patterns, document behaviours, and gently explore what might help. Sometimes the answer is a simple classroom adjustment. Other times, it’s an Individual Program Plan (IPP) developed in partnership with families and Kids Developmental Services, a leading provider of specialized support for young children in Alberta.
Through this partnership, families have access to:
Speech and language therapists
Occupational therapists
Physical therapists
Behavioural consultants
Individualized family support and consultation services
No matter the support, our goal is the same: to create a nurturing, responsive environment where every child can thrive.
The power of partnership
The truth is, early intervention only works when everyone’s on the same page. That’s why we want parents to feel part of the process, never left out of it.
One of the most meaningful ways we keep families connected is through documentation. Our educators observe closely and record each child’s experiences, capturing their ideas, expressions, and progress. When it’s time to make a plan, we do it together by reviewing and checking in as a team.
Because when children see the adults in their lives working together, it creates:
Makes learning visible
Honours their voice
Guides meaningful teaching
Connects you to the classroom
Celebrates every step
The environment matters
Our classrooms are designed with intention: calming colours, natural materials, and soft lighting that support focus, not overstimulation.
In our sensory room, you’ll find bubble tubes for mindful breathing, movable furniture for emotional release, and quiet corners where a child can simply rest and reset. It’s not a timeout, it’s a time-in. A space to regulate, reflect, and return when they’re ready.
These small design choices have a big impact, especially for children who experience the world more intensely.
